Subject: Review of my auto policy before renewal

I am reviewing this policy ahead of its renewal and would like the following addressed before the renewal premium is taken.

1. Please carry out a full discount review and tell me both which discounts are currently applied to this policy and which I may qualify for but am not receiving, together with what evidence each requires.
2. Please tell me whether any surcharge is currently applied to this policy, the expiry date of each one, and confirm that the policy will be re-rated on the date each surcharge comes off.
3. Please check whether I now qualify for placement in a different underwriting company within your group, and re-rate the policy if I do.
4. Once these items have been actioned, please send a revised declarations page so I can confirm the changes were applied.

Please confirm in writing what has been actioned and what the revised premium is. If any item cannot be actioned, please say which and why.

Thank you,
[your name]

The same thing, as a phone script

Hello — I'm reviewing my auto policy before it renews and I have a few specific things I'd like dealt with rather than a general question about price.

Could you confirm each of those in writing and send me a revised declarations page?

[Then stop talking. The pause does more work than the pitch.]

Nothing on this page is submitted anywhere. The letter is assembled in your browser and disappears when you close the tab.

Why the wording is specific

“Can you do better on my premium?” is the most common thing said on these calls and the least effective. The person on the phone cannot deviate from a filed rate — that would be unfair discrimination and it is the thing regulators police hardest. What they can do is perform defined tasks: correct a rating detail, run a discount review, confirm when a surcharge expires, check whether you qualify for a different company inside the group.

Every sentence this tool produces asks for one of those defined tasks by name, which is why it gets a different conversation. What is actually negotiable on an insurance policy explains the mechanism behind each one.

Before you send it

  • Get your declarations page out and compare it against last year’s. The line-by-line method takes about fifteen minutes and finds most of what belongs in this letter.
  • Start three to four weeks before the renewal date. Corrections take longer than a single call, and advance quotes are often priced better than same-week ones.
  • If you are also gathering competing quotes, get them at identical limits and deductibles first, so the letter can name a real number rather than a hope.
  • Keep every reply. Surcharge expiry dates in particular are worth diarizing for next year.

What it will not do

It will not argue a filed rate down, because nothing can. It will not reverse an accurate claim or violation on your record. And it will not help with a claim dispute or an allegation of misrepresentation — those need proper advice, not a template.

Check it yourselfNothing you enter is transmitted. There is no network request in this tool and no analytics event attached to what you type — the letter exists only in the browser tab you are reading this in.

Common questions

Do I have to give an email address to use this?

No. There is no form to submit, no account and no gate. The letter is assembled in your browser from the boxes you tick, and it disappears when you close the tab. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Should I write to my insurer or call them?

Both work, and they do different jobs. A call gets an answer faster and is the right way to handle corrections. A letter or email creates a record, which matters when you want surcharge expiry dates, a settlement basis or a discount decision confirmed in writing. The usual best sequence is to call, then send the same list in writing and ask for written confirmation of what was actioned.

Will a letter like this actually get my premium reduced?

It does the thing that makes a reduction possible, which is asking for specific, actionable items rather than a better price. A representative cannot deviate from a filed rate, but they can correct rating information, apply discounts you qualify for, confirm surcharge expiry and check company placement. Those are the levers that move a premium, and they are what this letter asks for by name.

What should I do before sending it?

Get your declarations page out and compare it against last year's. The letter is only as good as the issues you have identified, and almost every real issue is visible on those two documents — a mileage figure that stopped being true, a driver who moved out, a discount that has disappeared from the list.

Is this legal advice?

No. It is a template for asking your own insurer routine questions about your own policy, and nothing on this page is licensed insurance or legal advice. If you are dealing with a claim dispute, a cancellation for alleged misrepresentation, or anything with a legal dimension, take proper advice rather than sending a template.

Or send us the policy instead.
