Car insurance
Discounts worth asking for by name
Carriers apply the discounts they know about. They do not go looking on your behalf, and nothing on your policy audits itself. This is the list to read down the phone.

Two questions that do most of the work
“Which discounts am I currently receiving?” and “Which could I qualify for that I am not receiving?” Ask both, write the answers down, and then work through the list below for anything the representative did not mention. The first answer is usually shorter than people expect.
Why there are no percentages on this page
Discount values are filed per carrier and per state, and they change. Any percentage printed here would be wrong for most readers on the day it was written, and unverifiable afterwards. What does not change is which discounts exist, what qualifies for each, and what to ask — so that is what this page contains. Your carrier can tell you what each one is worth on your policy, and that is the only number that matters.
Payment and billing
| Discount | What qualifies | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Paid in full | Paying the whole term up front rather than in instalments | What is the paid-in-full price, and what is the total cost of the instalment plan including every fee? |
| Automatic payment / EFT | Payments taken automatically from a bank account or card | Does automatic withdrawal reduce the premium, remove the instalment fee, or both? |
| Paperless / e-signature | Documents delivered electronically, policy signed online | Am I enrolled? This one silently switches off surprisingly often. |
| Advance quote | A quote taken some weeks before the effective date | How far in advance do I need to quote to qualify, and does it apply at renewal? |
Policy and relationship
| Discount | What qualifies | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-policy (bundling) | Home, renters, condo, umbrella, motorcycle, boat with the same group | What does the auto premium look like with and without the bundle? Price each line standalone too. |
| Multi-car | More than one vehicle on the policy | Is it applied to every vehicle, and would adding a second vehicle to this policy beat insuring it separately? |
| Loyalty / continuous coverage | Years with the carrier, or unbroken coverage with anyone | Is continuous coverage from a prior carrier credited? Most credit it, but it usually has to be asked for. |
| Claims-free / safe driver | A defined period without an at-fault claim or violation | When do I next qualify for a longer claims-free tier, and does anything on my record come off soon? |
| Homeowner | Owning a home, even if it is insured elsewhere | Do you apply a homeowner credit? Many carriers do, and it does not require the home policy. |
Driver profile
| Discount | What qualifies | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Defensive driving course | A completed, state-approved accident prevention course | Which providers do you accept, how long does the credit last, and is there an age restriction in my state? |
| Good student | A student meeting a stated grade standard | What evidence do you need, and how often must it be resubmitted? |
| Student away at school | A student living away without regular access to the car | What distance qualifies, and does it change if they come home for the summer? |
| Driver training | Completed driver education, usually for newly licensed drivers | Does this apply to my newly licensed driver, and what certificate do you need? |
| Affinity / employer / alumni | Membership of a professional body, union, employer scheme or alumni association | Read out your memberships and ask which are on their list. This one is almost never volunteered. |
| Military or first responder | Service or occupation, where the carrier files such a credit | Do you offer an occupational credit, and what proof is required? |
Vehicle and usage
| Discount | What qualifies | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-theft device | Factory or aftermarket alarm, immobiliser, tracking system | Which systems on my vehicle qualify? Many factory systems are never recorded on the policy. |
| Safety equipment | Airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, driver assistance systems | Is my vehicle's equipment correctly recorded on the policy? |
| New vehicle / original owner | A vehicle below a stated age, or owned from new | Does my vehicle still qualify, and when does the credit step down? |
| Low mileage | Annual mileage below a stated threshold | What is the threshold, and what mileage do you currently have on file for me? |
| Garaging | Parking in a garage or secured lot rather than on the street | Is my parking arrangement recorded correctly? |
| Telematics / usage-based | Enrolling in a monitored driving program | Can this program increase my premium as well as reduce it? Get the answer before enrolling. |
The two worth refusing
A telematics program you have not read the terms of
Usage-based programs are genuinely good value for low-mileage and careful drivers, and they are the one discount on this page that can run in reverse. Some are discount-only by design; others price on the data and can increase a renewal. Ask the question explicitly, in writing if you can: can this program raise my premium? An honest answer either way tells you what you need.
A discount that arrives with less coverage
Occasionally a “discount” offered on a retention call is a coverage change wearing a friendlier word — a higher deductible, a dropped endorsement, thinner uninsured motorist limits. Ask what changed on the policy to produce the lower number, and compare the two declarations pages before accepting. The line-by-line method takes fifteen minutes and catches this every time.
Running the call
- Have your declarations page open. The discounts currently applied are printed on it, so you can tell what is new.
- Ask for the review by name rather than asking for a better price. A discount review is a defined task the representative can actually perform.
- Read your memberships, your vehicle's equipment and your household's circumstances out loud. Most missed discounts are missed because the carrier was never told.
- Ask what proof each discount needs and send it the same day. Discounts that require documentation are the ones most often abandoned halfway.
- Ask when each discount is next reviewed or expires, and diarize those dates.
- Ask for a revised declarations page afterwards and check the discount block actually changed.
Check it yourselfWhich discounts a carrier offers, what each is worth and who qualifies are all part of the carrier’s filed rating rules for your state. Your carrier can tell you directly, and in many states the filings themselves are public — see how to look up a rate filing.
What discounts cannot do
Discounts sit on top of a filed rate. They can make a mispriced policy less mispriced; they cannot make the wrong carrier the right one. If your policy is with a carrier whose rating plan simply does not suit your profile, the full discount stack will not close the gap — only a different carrier will. That is why the discount review and the competing quotes belong in the same week, not in different months.
The full negotiation playbook puts both in order.
Common questions
How do I get more discounts on my car insurance?
Ask for a full discount review by name, and ask two questions: which discounts am I currently receiving, and which could I qualify for that I am not receiving. Carriers apply what they know about and do not audit your circumstances for you, so a discount that depends on something you never told them — a car with an anti-theft system, a defensive driving course, a professional association, a garage you now park in — simply never gets applied. The list on this page is what to read down.
Do insurance discounts expire?
Some do. Certain discounts are written for a defined term and step down afterwards, and many others depend on a condition that can quietly stop being true: a card expiring so autopay switched off, a paperless setting reset, a student who graduated, a course certificate that ran out, a bundled policy that moved to another carrier. If your renewal rose and the discount list is shorter than last year's, that is your cause and it is usually reversible.
Is bundling home and auto insurance always cheaper?
Not always, and it is worth testing rather than assuming. Ask your carrier what the auto premium looks like with and without the bundle, then price each policy standalone in the market. Sometimes the bundle discount is smaller than the gap to a better standalone carrier on one of the two lines. Bundling also has a non-price benefit — one renewal date, one claims relationship — which is worth something, but it should be a choice made with the numbers in front of you.
Are telematics programs worth joining?
It depends on the program and on how you drive, and the question to ask before enrolling is whether the program can increase your premium as well as reduce it. Some are discount-only; some price on the data collected, which can go either way. They generally reward low mileage and smooth driving, and they generally penalise hard braking, late-night driving and phone handling. If you drive little, the upside is real. If you are unsure, ask for the terms in writing before you opt in.
Does a defensive driving course lower insurance?
In many states a completed, approved defensive driving or accident prevention course produces a premium credit, and in some states carriers are required to offer one to eligible drivers. The rules on eligibility, the approved course providers and how long the credit lasts are all state-specific. Ask your carrier which courses it accepts before you pay for one, and ask how long the credit runs so you know when to retake it.
Does paying in full save money on car insurance?
Frequently, in two ways: many carriers price a paid-in-full policy lower than an instalment plan, and instalment plans often carry per-payment service fees that never appear in a quoted premium. Ask for the paid-in-full price and the total cost of the instalment plan including fees, and compare those two figures rather than the monthly number. If cashflow makes paying in full impossible, ask whether automatic withdrawal reduces or removes the fee.
